ONV Letter to The Editor Example

The Letter to the Editor (LTE)  section of a publication is the most-read section of any newspaper, local to regional. Why? It is exactly what your neighbors are actually thinking about and care enough to write about. Writing an effective Letter to the Editor (LTE) is a strategy for ensuring our message is heard at a local level.

Why: The primary goal is to influence public opinion, spark a necessary debate on a local issue, and hold elected officials accountable for their decisions.

How: Be concise, factual, and respectful. Start with a strong thesis statement, provide evidence or personal experience to support your claims, and clearly propose a solution rather than just stating a complaint. Maintain a formal, persuasive, yet reasonable tone.

What: Focus strictly on one core topic. Introduce the issue clearly, present your argument logically, and conclude with a call to action—telling the readers or officials exactly what steps should be taken.

Here are three exact reasons to write an LTE:

  1. To Drive Public Awareness: To bring an underreported local issue to the attention of the community.
  2. To Prompt Action: To urge local government or officials to address a specific policy or problem immediately.
  3. To Foster Dialogue: To start a constructive public conversation about a relevant civic matter.

We have included a sample LTE for you to customize, or simply send as is to your local publication.

To the Editor:

I strongly support Our Neighborhood Voices, a grassroots coalition of California residents fighting to restore local control over zoning and planning. Sacramento’s ongoing housing laws, including recent measures like SB 79, override local zoning to impose one-size-fits-all density mandates near transit hubs and beyond. These policies, sidelined by city councils, limit community input and often fail to deliver truly affordable housing for working families while straining infrastructure, parking, and neighborhood character.

Our neighborhoods know best what fits—balanced growth that includes genuinely affordable units, respects existing communities, and involves neighbors in decisions. State mandates hand-blank checks to developers without requiring meaningful contributions to schools, roads, or services.

The project XYZ is a perfect example of this.

Our Neighborhood Voices champions a constitutional initiative to empower locals to prioritize appropriate, affordable housing without sacrificing democratic oversight. It’s time to push back against centralized overreach and protect the livability of our cities.
